Teaching: “When the Enemy Comes in Like a Flood” — Isaiah 59:19 (KJV)
“So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west,
and his glory from the rising of the sun.
When the enemy shall come in like a flood,
the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.”
1. The Global Reverence of God
“So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun.”
- Hebrew: יִירְאוּ (yir’u) — from yare’, “to revere, to stand in awe.”
- The result of God’s intervention is that His name will be reverenced worldwide.
- Jamieson-Fausset-Brown: The fear of the LORD will spread across the nations once He shows Himself mighty on behalf of His people.
- F. B. Meyer: When God’s power is displayed, men will not only dread His judgments but admire His glory.
- Witness Lee: The west and east symbolize the universality of God’s testimony—His glory fills the whole earth.
- Cross-reference: Isaiah 45:6 — “That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside Me.”
2. The Flood of Opposition
“When the enemy shall come in like a flood…”
- John Gill: When the enemy of souls—Satan or the wicked—comes in with a torrent of temptation or persecution, the LORD Himself arises for His people.
- F. B. Meyer: The enemy rushes in as waters, but the Spirit’s resistance is stronger than the flood.
- Witness Lee: The flood typifies the enemy’s chaos and death, but the Spirit represents God’s resurrection life overcoming death.
3. The Spirit of the LORD Shall Lift Up a Standard
a. Hebrew Meaning and Imagery
- רוּחַ יְהוָה (ruach YHWH) = “Spirit,” “wind,” or “breath of Yahweh.”
- תָּקִים דֶּגֶל (taqim degel) = “shall raise a banner / standard.”
- Root idea: The Spirit of God does not stand still but rises in motion and power to resist and repel the enemy.
b. Albert Barnes’ Hebrew Insight (Integrated)
Barnes notes that the Hebrew text here is rich yet ambiguous, producing several possible nuances:
- The word צַר (tsar)—from tsarar, “to press or be narrow” — may mean:
- An enemy or adversary (Num 10:9; Job 16:9);
- Distress or affliction (Ps 4:2; 18:7); or
- A narrow, confined river (Num 22:26).
Thus, Isaiah’s phrase may describe either an enemy flooding in or a river compressed and driven on by mighty winds.
Barnes—like Lowth—prefers the latter: Yahweh Himself, advancing with the force of a torrent driven by divine wind, coming in judgment to defend His people.
- The phrase רוּחַ יְהוָה (ruach YHWH) can mean “wind of Yahweh” as well as “Spirit of Yahweh.” In several Scriptures (1 Kings 18:12; Ezek 13:13) ruach denotes a mighty wind. Hence the image may picture God’s powerful wind driving the enemy back, like waters forced down a narrow channel until they overturn everything in their path.
- The word נָסָה (nasah) / נוּס (nus) — translated “shall lift up a standard” — may mean either “to raise a banner” or “to drive back, cause to flee.” Barnes concludes that the context favors the idea of impelling or driving back the enemy, not merely raising a flag.
In summary: the Spirit (or wind) of the LORD is seen driving back the enemy with irresistible force, like a divine storm that sweeps evil away.
c. Commentary Harmony
- Jamieson-Fausset-Brown: The Spirit raises a banner of truth and righteousness against falsehood.
- John Gill: That standard is Christ Himself—the ensign for all nations (Isa 11:10).
- Witness Lee: The Spirit as the breath of God lifts up Christ as the banner of victory in the church.
- Chuck Smith: When Satan floods the believer with fear or temptation, the Spirit raises the Word of God within as the counter force.
- David Guzik: God Himself intervenes to defend His people; the flood may come, but the Spirit will always counter it.
4. The Message in Balance
While Barnes shows that the original Hebrew likely depicts Yahweh advancing in judgment, the spiritual principle stands:
Whenever the enemy floods in with evil or despair, the Spirit of the LORD arises as the active power of resistance—raising the banner of Christ and driving back the flood.
F. B. Meyer: God’s Spirit is never passive; He always meets the attack with greater power.
Guzik: We may be overwhelmed, but the Spirit never is.
5. Application
- In Crisis: When the enemy rushes in like a flood, trust the Spirit’s power to resist and push back.
- In Ministry: Lift high the standard of Christ—the Word and truth that the Spirit raises.
- In Worship: Let the world see His glory from east to west; revere His Name.
- In Perspective: The flood may come, but the Spirit will always have the final move.
6. Closing Revelation
From the west to the east, all will know His glory.
The Spirit of the LORD — the divine wind — drives back the enemy’s flood and raises the banner of Christ victorious.
“When the enemy comes in like a flood,
the Spirit of the LORD drives it back and raises His standard of salvation.”
THE NEW STANDARD HAS BEEN SET, BUT YOU MUST DESIRE AND PRESS INTO IT AND STIR YOURSELF UP IN FAITH AND PRAYER!
